UNESCO is set to officially list the Saman Dance from Aceh as Intangible Cultural Heritage of Humanity in November.

“The Saman Dance will be announced as intangible world cultural heritage by UNESCO on November 19, 2011, ”I Gde Pitana, Indonesian Culture and Tourism Ministry cultural and tourism resources agency head, said Monday in Jakarta.

The nomination has been started last year by the submission of nomination file which has been prepared with full participation of the Saman community, mainly the District of Gayo Lues, Aceh Province to meet the spirit of the UNESCO 2003 Convention on Safeguarding of the Intangible Cultural Heritage and the relevant Operational Directives pursuant to the said Convention, to which Indonesia has become a State Party in January 2008.

The original nomination file include photographic, audiovisual and sound documentation which had been submitted directly by the Government of Indonesia to the Chief of UNESCO Intangible Heritage Section. The nomination file was examined for the inscription on the UNESCO List of Intangible Cultural Heritage in Need of Urgent Safeguarding.
